Welsh Onion
Allium fistulosum
About this plant
Allium fistulosum
Type: Perennial · Family: Amaryllidaceae · Native Region: Pacific Northwest
Derived from the old Norman word for "foreign," Welsh Onions are not in fact Welsh, but East Asian. Allium fistulosum's other common moniker, "Japanese Bunching Onion," is a bit more accurate, except they also don't bunch. Instead, these vigorous perennial alliums grow tall, hollow leaves can be harvested all year round, as they easily overwinter in Portland's mild climate. Prized for their delicious and mild flavor, Welsh Onion is a perfect perennial stand in for other annual alliums. Pollinators adore their late spring blooms, especially european honeybees.
