Desert Peach
Prunus andersonii
About this plant
Prunus andersonii
Type: Shrub · Family: Rosaceae · Native Region: Pacific Northwest
Desert Peach is a striking xeric shrub able to provide abundance in the unlikeliest of places. Hugging both sides of the Sierra Nevadas, Prunus andersonii grows in oak forests and dry scrub. Early spring blooms are stunning. There are few dryland species capable of such a magnificent fuchsia display, especially when they reach maturity at ~7ft. Dry years are unlikely to produce fruits, but amply moist seasons yield the most unlikely of juicy, sweet Desert Peaches. Though not native to the Willamette Valley, this shrub would make a unique statement specimen in a xeric or rock garden.
